Energy management all the more important for business as Ofgem chief warns of bill rises

As the UK is set to become more reliant on energy exports and Ofgem warns of rising costs to consumers, it is important that businesses are aware of the potential impact this will have and what steps can be taken.

The BBC news[i] yesterday has been filled with warning from Ofgem’s chief executive, Alistair Buchanan, who explains that Britain's power production capacity is likely to lead to more energy imports and customers paying more.

This week is National Go Green Week. In its 7th year Go Green Week is designed to encourage activities in schools, colleges and universities to raise awareness and launch practical projects to showcase practical solutions for a low-carbon future.

We believe that schools are demonstrating some tremendous initiatives in engaging with staff and students to bring out energy-saving ideas. A couple of our customers have found that the secret is encouragement and involvement for the whole school working together to drive down energy costs.

Reduce, don’t just rely on renewable

 
Green Britain

On Monday, David Cameron warned that only the world’s greenest economies will be able to compete in the global economic race over the coming years. Cameron explained that the UK now has to prioritise investment into green energy and, crucially, energy efficiency.

Finally, reduction is gaining traction against the consistent demand for renewable energy. However the concern is that it is still only second choice in the government’s eyes.

The clock is ticking! The DECC Consultation closes in two days

We are into the last stretch. The Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) consultation period is open for just two more days – closing on January 31st 2013.

We have reported before how the DECC has invited companies to influence the latest Energy Bill, requesting ideas on how the Government can help businesses reduce their energy usage and therefore their costs. Now we must encourage everyone to have their say before the consultation period closes in a couple of days.

Energy Minister, John Hayes, published the coalition’s much anticipated Energy Bill on the 29th November 2012. The bill set out the various measures that will be enforced to ensure the UK’s switch to ‘a low carbon economy’, and to attract the £110bn investment needed to keep up with the nation’s rising demand for electricity. However within the bill the energy reduction element is by no means finalised.

This week, the Telegraph announced that a group of eight senior businessmen from companies such as Unilever and Philips Electronics had approached the Prime Minister regarding the confusion over UK carbon legislation and the unclear guidelines set for businesses. The warning was given to the government that failure to comply with policies poses the risk of damaging the economic recovery.
